Abstract
The annual intake of new CAPD patients and the total number of patients remaining on CAPD have both increased rapidly since CAPD was first introduced in Korea in 1981. Over a 3 1/2 years period between March 1981 and September 1984 a total of 315 patients with endstage renal diseasr (ESRD) were started on CAPD at 7 hospitals and 224 patients were remaining on CAPD as of Sept. 30, 1984. This was 27.4% of all dialysis patients at the time. Peritonitis and other CAPD-related complications were responsible for 36. 0% of those who disconti- nued CAPD. Financial difficulty was the reason in 10. 5% for discontinuing CAPD. As of Sept. 30, 1984, 71. 1% of 315 patients were still on CAPD,14. 6 % were dead, 6. 7% were lost to follow-up and 5.4/ were on hemodialysis. Patient survival rates were 89. 2% at 6 months and 84. 0%. At 12 months. Technical survival rates were 74. 7% and 42. 9% at 6 and 12 months respe- ctively. CAPD will assume more important roles in the management of ESRD patients in Korea as the incidence of peritonitis and other CAPD-related complicatious are reduced and technical survival improved.
