Abstract
Renin is a proteolytic enzyme which converts renin substrate to potent vasoconstricting substance, angiotensin If through the renin angiotensin sys- tem. In general, hypertension in children has its origin from renal problem in above 70 percent and measurement of plasma level of renin is essential for the evaluation of hypertensive disorders in childhood. However, there was no normal standard value of plasma renin in Korea. So we have me- asured the plaama renin activity, its diurnal vari- ation and interrelationship to the excretion of so- dium to establish the standard value in Korean children. The subjects were one hundred and thirteen pa- tients who had been admitted to the Pediatric Department of Severance Hospital from September, 1983 to May, 1984 due to mild diseases except eardiac, hepatic, renal, endocrinologic and CNS problems. The results were as follows: 1) The mean plasma renin activity(PRA) in the newborn infants was highest(19. 42 ng/ml/hr) and decreased gradually with increasing age, however, all these levels were significantly higher than that of adults. 2) The mean PRA before ambulation was higher than that measured after ambulation, but there was no statistical significance. 3) T.here was inverse relationshpi between PRA and the amount of 24 hour sodium excretion in urine(r= 0. 5230).
