| Abstract |
|
Malnutrition and wasting occur commonly in patients with cbronic renal failure. We studied nutritional status and lipid profiles in 72 uremic atients on maintenance hemodialysis. The follow- ing results were observed; 1) The number of patients with underweight were 14(19. 4%) and those with overweight and obesity were 8(11.1%'). 2) Triceps skinfold thickness and total body fat(%) were significantly decreased in patients compared with normal controls(p(0. 005), but there was no difference in MAMC between each group. 3) Serum cholesterol and trigl yceride were within normal limits in 17 patients(93.1%). Compared underweight gro cp with overweight, the e parameters were significantly different. HDL-cholesterol was low in 6 5 patients( 90.3%) and normal range of HDLC was noted only in five males(6. 9%) and in t wo females(2. 8%). It is thought that a fall in HDLC was due to uremic metabolism rather than to nutritional status. 4) Significant improvement of BUN, serum creatinine, hemoglobin and HDLC was noted in patients on 3 times a week dialysis compared with once a week. |
