Abstract
A total of 548 peritoneal catheters were placed in 276 patients with end-stage renal disease during a period of 5 years between 1982 and 1987 at Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital. The actuarial catheter survival was 65% and 50% at 6 and 12 months, respectively. Of the 330 catheters removed because of various complications 156 (47%) failures occurred in the first 3 months of the CAPD with 85 (26%) failing in the first 2 weeks. In the first 2 weeks obstruction was the most frequent cause of failures (60 of 85 failures) and during the next 2 1/2 month period peritonitis (46 of 71 remov- al) was the major cause of catheter removal. Prevention of obstruction in the first 2 weeks and peritonitis thereafter are the key for better catheter survival. Surgical techniques of catheter insertion are de- scribed.
