Abstract
It is well known that the renin-agniotensin system (RAS) plays an important role on the maintenance of blood pressure and regulation of water and electrolytes balance. In adrenalectomized rats, the activity of RAS markedly enhaced, but the exact mechanisms involved are still unknown. Furthermore a few reports about the ' response of the RAS to stimuli or inhibitors in adrenalectomized rat exist. The present study was undertaken to determine whether the response of plasma renin activity to angiotensin II and sodium pentobarbital may be modified in adrenalectomized rats. 1) In adrenalectomized rats, plasma renin activity and hematocrit increased and blood pressure decreased compared to sham-operated rats and to adrenalectom- ized rats treated with dexamethasone. 2) The increase in plasma renin activity by sodium pentobarbital was attenuated in adrenalectomized rats. 3) The increase in blood pressure and the decrease in plasma renin activity by infusion of angiotensin II were also attenuated in adrenalectomized rats. 4) With treatment of dexamethasone, the responsive- ness of RAS and blood pressure to angiotensin II and sodium pentobarbital in adrenalectomized rats was res- tored to the control level. We suggest that the response to angiotensin II and sodium pentobarbital was modified in adrenalectomized rats and the glucocorticoid may be partly involved in the modification of RAS.
