Abstract
The protective effects of Bi(NO,), against the ne- phrotoxicity of HgC1, and gentamicin was investigated in the kidney of mice treated with either Bi(NO,), or HgC1,(or gentamicin) or both. The mice given HgC1,(30 pmol/kg, once, s.c.) after pretreatment with Bi(NO,), (50 p mol/kg, once, s.c.) significantly decreased blood urea nitrogen level in comparison with those of the mice given HgC1, alone. However renal nonprotein-bound sulfhydryl concentra- tion was significantly increased in comparison with that of the mice given HgCl, alone. On the other hand, the treatment with gentamicin (200 mg/kg, once a day for 4 days, I.p.) in the presence of pretreatment with Bi(NO), (50 pmol/kg, once a day for 5 days, I.p.) significantly reduced blood urea nitrogen level compared with the control mice given gentamicin alone. In contrast, administration of gentamicin in the presence of pretreatment with Bi(NO,), 'significantly increased nonprotein-bound sulfhydryl concentration. There were no significant changes in renal lipid per- oxidation in both groups pretreated with Bi(NO,) as compared with each control mice treated with HgC1 or gentamicin alone.
