Abstract
Serum IgE level were measured in 30 children with minimal change nephrotic syndrome which was con- firmed by percutaneous renal biopsy admitted to the department of pediatrics, InJe University Pusan Paik Hospital between June 1985 and december 1989. All patients have been observed over 2 years. The results showed that there was statistically significant increase of serum IgE level in children with minimal change nephrotic syndrome compared than that of normal con- trol. In comparison of serum IgE level according to the responsiveness of steroid therapy, there was no signifi- cant diference between two groups even though higher serum IgE level was observed in steroid resistant group. A higher level of serum IgE was noted in frequent relapse or steroid dependent group compared than that of infrequent relapse group. But there was also no significant differences of serum IgE levels both ne- phrotic phase (regardless of initial attack or relapses) and remission phase between infrequent relapose group and frequent relapse or steroid-dependent group respec- tively. During follow-up studies, various patterns of serum IgE alterations were observed while in relapses and in remissions. In conclusion, there was limitations considering serum IgE level as a predictive index for the therapeutic response of steroid therapy and for evaluation of its clinical course in children with minimal change ne- phrotic syndrome.
