Abstract
To determine the possible mechanisrns in the pressor responses induced by centrally administered hypertonic NaCl, we examined the effects of hyper- tonic NaC1 on blood pressure, heart rate (HR), urinary volurne (UV), sodium excretion (UNaV) and plasma renin concentration (PRC) in anesthetized rats. Intra- cerebroventricular (ICV) administration of hypertonic NaC1 (0.6 M and 1.2 M, 3 ml/min) increased mean arterial pressure (MAP) and HR, of which rnagnitude was co@rnparable regardless of the NaCl concentration. Central pressor responses to 0.6 M NaC1 were attenuated by pretreatrnent with hexamethonium or captopril. The ICV 0.6 M NaC1 increased UV and UNaV. While the ICV atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP, 3 pmol/min) alone did not cause significant changes in MAP, UV or UNaV, ANP abolished the pressor responses to 0.6 M NaCl. UV and UNaV were unaffected by the ANP, however. PRC was increased by ICV hypertonic NaCI, which was significantly decreased by ICV ANP. These results indicate that an activation of the sympathetic outflow and the renin-angiotensin system may contribute to the pressor responses induced by central hypertonic NaCl stimulation. It is also suggested that ANP plays a role in central cardiovascular regulation.
