Abstract |
One hundred and seventy-nine patients(mean age 40. 2 years, range 11-76) with endstage renal disease have been treated with CAPD at Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital over a period of 3 years between July 1982 and August 1985. Peritoneal access was achieved by inserting single-cuff Tenckhoff catheters(Evermed, Medina, Washington) by open surgical technique. A total of 336 peritoneal,'catheters were implanted in 179 patients. The actuarial catheter survival hy Kaplan- Meier method was 60% and 45% at 6 and 12 months, respectively. Mean survival of all catheters was 7.1 months. The aurvival of catheters impl- anted in 1984 was significantly better than cat- heters implanted in 1983. Peritonitis was the most common cause of catheter removal. Others were obstruction, exit-site infection, accidental or spontaneous removal of catheters and peritoneal adhesion in the order of frequency. The frequencyof obstruction has sharply diminished since 1984 and peritonitis has become more important as a reason for catheter removal. Prevention of peri- tonitis is the key to better catheter survival. |
