Abstract
Granular deposits of IgA are known to occur in the walls of superficial vessels in apparently healthy skin of patients with primary IgA nephropathy and Henoch- Schonlein purpura, but the specificity of the finding is still a matter of debate. We investigated the disease specificity and sensitivity of these deposits in the skin of patients with glomer- ulonephritis. In 45 patients with various glomerulone- phritis, the sensitivity of the finding for the diagnosis of IgA nephropathy was only 38%, the specificity being also 38%. We conclude that IgA deposits in the skin are not diagnostic for IgA nephropathy. However, this finding may help one in the understanding of the pathogenesis of the IgA nephropathy.
