Abstract
To elucidate the clinical relationship between non-renal manifestations and renal involvement in Henoch- Schonlein purpura (HSP) during the early disease stage, we carried out a retrospective review on the medical records of 135 children who were diagnosed as HSP at the Department of Pediatrics, Seoul National University Children's Hospital during the period of 5 years between June 1982 an May 1987. And the results were summarized as follows; 1) The mean age at the onset of HSP was 7.2 years and boys outnumbered girls by 1.6:l. 2) The incidence of clinical nephropathy was 54.8%. 3) Among the early clinical manifestations of HSP, those with older age at the onset (over 5 years), with more severe gastrointestinal symptoms and with joint symptoms were more likely to be related to severe renal involvement. However, there was no difference in the severity of renal involvement between both sexes. With the above results, we could conclude that older age at onset, severe gastrointestinal involvement and presence of joint involvement at the onset related with more severe clinical renal involvement.
