Abstract
Peritonitis is a well recognized and most significant complication of peritoneal dialysis. The most common causes of peritonitis are peritoneal catheter-related intraluminal and exogenous contamination. However, the colon is also felt to be a potential source of dialysate contamination. We experienced a rare case of a 65 year old male patient who developed peritonitis by gram negative organisms (Serratia marscence) following a colonoscopy with rectal biopsies for evaluation of rectal bleeding. Six hours after the colonoscopy, the patient developed diffuse aMominal pain. The dialysate was turbid with 20,000 WBC/mm' (99% PMN cells) and grew Serratia marscence after 2 days. The peritonitis was not improved in spite of proper antibiotics, and so, peritoneal catheter was removed. We report a case of peritonitis following colonoscopy on CAPD with review of literatures.
